Synthroid Thyroxine made by Abbott pharmaceuticals is available from some community pharmacies as an alternative to the subsidised Eltroxin, brand by GSK.

Abbott Synthroid Thyroxine is available in both 50mcg and 100mg strengths. It is FDA approved. More information on Synthroid

Currently there is No shortage of stock whereas the Goldshield Thyroxin was hard to sourced by the pharmacy wholesalers due to various reasons so it will no longer be available from community pharmacies.

Abbott Synthroid Thyroxine, is a section 29 medicines, so you will need a prescription from your GP.

Directions
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Take on an empty stomach at least 30 mins before breakfast. Do not crush or ½ tabs. Admin 25 mcg doses and increments as 50 mcg on alternate days. Individualise dose. Target serum T4: 70-160 nanomol/L; thyrotrophin: < 5 mU/L (age = 50 years, no heart disease).


Adults: initially 50-100 mcg/day; may titrate by 50 mcg/day at 3-4 week intervals until normal metabolism maintained; usual range 100-200 mcg/day.

Adults > 50 years: initial max. 50 mcg/day.
Cardiac disease: initially 25 mcg/day; may increase gradually by 25 mcg/day at ˜ 4 week intervals.


Children. Congenital hypothyroidism, juvenile myxoedema: initially 25 mcg/day; may increase by 25 mcg/day at 2-4 week intervals. Juvenile myxoedema, age > 1 year: initially 2.5-5 mcg/kg/day; round dose to nearest 25 mcg.
