History of Iridology

The Iridology concept has existed for centuries. Philippus Meyers, in 1670, published a book called Chiromatica medica, which noted that signs in the iris indicate diseases.

However the father of Iridology is considered to be Dr Ignatz Von Peczely, the date of discovery estimated as 1861. Von Peczely, was a Hungarian physician. His story is an interesting one. As a child he accidentally broke an owl's leg. He observed that a black line formed in the owl's lower iris at the same time of the injury but this changed in appearance after the owl's leg had healed. As a Physician, he treated a patient with a broken leg and whose eyes he observed a black streak in the same location as on the injured owl's iris. This discovery lead Von Peczely, to the theory that there could be a possible connection between diseases and eye markings. He carry out decades of comparative study on his patients eyes and mapped organs across zones identified by hours and minutes on a clock face super imposed over drawings of the eyes. In 1881, he published his theories in a book called Discoveries in the field of Natural Science and Medicine:Instruction in the study of Diagnosis from the Eye.

What is Iridology?

An iridologist studies the Iris(the coloured part of your eye) with an Iriscope, to detect underlying signs of developing disease and trends towards illness sometimes before symptoms even appear, or other medical tests show dysfunction. It is a preventive practice that helps people understand their inherent strengths and weakness so that they can take preventative measures to obtain and maintain optimal health.

According to iridology theory, variations in the patterns and markings within the iris can reveal emerging illness in the body.

How Does iridology Work?

The Iridologist views the iris as a map to the body, every organ is believed to correspond to a particular location on the iris. By studying an enlarge image of a patients iris and paying close attention to the thin membrane of connective tissue over it, iridologists claim that this tissue can reveal the potential for degenerative diseases in the body. They alos look for variious indications, marks and discolouration in the iris to reveal innate strengths and weakness throughout the body.

Iridology is not a method of treatment, so fo this reason it is common for practitioners to study other parts of holistic medicine such as homoeopathy or naturopathy so they can treat the illness.
