Evening Primrose Oil is derived from the seed of the Evening Primrose Plant (Oenothera biennis), and contains 10 percent gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Factors in the typical diet such as saturated fat and trans fatty acids as well as vitamin and mineral deficiencies can block the formation of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) from linoleic acid (the omega 6 essential fatty acid).

Other factors, which can adversely affect the enzyme delta 6 desaturase , which is responsible for the conversion of linoleic to gamma linolenic in the body, are : high alcohol intake; old age; viral infections and radiation. It is the GLA and resulting prostaglandins, which are important for health. Prostaglandins are hormone like substances, which control a multitude of essential functions in the body. Evening Primrose Oil contains GLA and promotes the production of prostaglandin E (PGE1).
